Louisiana CDL practice test

1. How is the  Lousiana CDL test designed?

As with the CDL tests in other states, there will be two parts that you should complete to take the Louisiana CDL. They are the General knowledge test and the skill/road test. 

  • General Knowledge test: the basic knowledge test includes all the truck’s information that is clearly stated in the LA CDL Handbook. Generally, a knowledge test will combine 50 multiple choice questions and true/false questions. To pass the test, ensure that you got at least 40 correct questions.
  • Skill/Road test: You will be required to perform all the driving skills, and how to operate them safely to the examiner. You can check all the information from 49 CFR 383.113 through 49 CFR 383.123 in CDL Louisiana Handbook to make sure you won’t miss anything.

3. How to take the Louisiana CDL?

3.1. Meet all the Louisiana CDL requirements

Check the qualifications list below to know whether you are qualified to apply the Lousiana CDL or not:

  • At least 18 years old to drive a commercial vehicle in Louisiana 
  • More than 21 years old to drive beyond Louisiana and carry hazardous materials and passengers.
  • Hold only one driver’s license and it is not in suspension, revocation, or cancellation situation
  • Pass the Medical Exam of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
  • Provide all the personal identification including Social Security Card, a Birth Certificate, or a Green Card

3.2. Get proper Lousiana CDL Endorsement 

To be able to haul materials, you must hold a proper endorsement by taking extra exams. In Louisiana, there are available endorsements such as HAZMAT vehicles, School buses, Tanks, and Double or triple trailers endorsement. 

3.3. Pass the skill/road test

This skill test consists of a pre-trip inspection and basic skills as well. You will perform your ability to an examiner and it often takes you 30 - 60 minutes.

4. How much will you pay for Louisiana CDL?

During the process of getting a CDL, there are fees that you must cover:

  • Commercial learner's permit application fee: $15.
  • Third-party skills tests: $100. DOES NOT INCLUDE vehicle rental costs.
  • Commercial driver's license fee: $61.50.
  • Fee for Orleans parish residents: $76.50.
  • Endorsements: $7.50 each.
