1. Who should own a Maine CDL?

In Maine, it’s impossible for hauling a big truck without a license. There are special requirements for drivers to operate any vehicle including:

  • You drive a single vehicle with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs
  • You drive a combination vehicle with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs, dragging a unit over 10,000 lbs GVWR
  • You drive a passenger van or bus that can carry more than 16 people
  • You drive any vehicle that hauls hazardous material, or a select agent or toxin listed in 42 CFR Part 73

2. What papers or documents you should prepare for Maine CDL?

In order to own a Maine CDL, there are several requirements and documents for proper steps that you should notice. However, the general requirement for every state is the age mark. Specifically, you must be at least 18 years old to drive in ME state and 21 years old to operate a specific type of truck such as a hazard or tanker. In addition, you must in hand some documents:

  • Medical certification of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
  • Trusted personal identification such as a Social Security Card, a Birth Certificate, or a Green Card
  • A driver’s license that not be banned or canceled

3. How is the Maine CDL test designed?

In general, the format of the Maine CDL test is the same as other states. The test taker will do 2 parts to archive a CDL, including the written/knowledge test and the skill/road test. 

  • Knowledge test: The knowledge test covers all the content of the Maine CDL manual. A passing score on a 50-multiple-choice general knowledge test will be 80 percent (40/50 correct questions). On the other hand, applicants must additionally pass additional endorsement exams appropriate for the target class type and purpose (carrying passengers, hazardous materials, etc.) of driving a motor vehicle.
  • Skill test: You are going to be tested your driving skill and it often takes you 30-60 minutes.

  • Commercial driver's license:
    - Under 65 years old, expire in 5 years: $34
  • - Older than 65 years old, expire in 4 years: $28
  • Endorsement: $20 

6. Can you renew your Maine CDL online?

Absolutely. The commercial driver's license issued by Maine will expire after 6 years. So, if you want to keep driving your car, you'll need to renew your license. Normally, when your license is about to expire, the CDL office will email you and send an invitation to accept. If you didn’t receive the email, you can simply visit the ME CDL website and fill in the CDL renewal form.
