1. What is about the knowledge test? 

What class of license and what endorsement you need will decide what kinds of knowledge tests you must take. Keep in mind that your knowledge test scores are valid for 180 days. The CDL knowledge tests consist of:

• The general knowledge test: The test is taken by all applicants.
• The passenger transport test (P): The test is right for all bus driver applicants.
• The air brakes test: If you drive a vehicle that has air brakes including air over hydraulic brakes, you should take this test. 
• The combination vehicles test: The test is required if you want to drive combination vehicles.
• The hazardous materials test (H): The test is required for those who want to haul hazardous materials.
• The tank vehicle test (N): The test is required if you want to haul any liquid or gaseous materials in a tank or tanks which have an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. Besides, the tank is either permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or chassis.
• The doubles/triples test (T): The test is required if you want to pull double or triple trailers.
• The School Bus test (S) If you want to drive a school bus, you are required to take the test. 

2. What to expect on your skills test?

After passing the required knowledge test(s), you can take the CDL skills test when you are eligible. The CDL Skills Test encompasses 3 segments: Vehicle Inspection, Basic Vehicle Control, and On-Road Driving. You must take the segments in the order listed and must pass each one before moving to the next.  

Keep in mind that the skills test(s) can be taken by appointment only on a daily basis. Thus, make your appointment as far in advance as possible. You must hold a CLP for 14 days before skills testing. If for any reason you cannot attend your appointment, please give at least a 24-hour notice so as to schedule others in need of the skills test. 

2.1. Vehicle Inspection

You will check to see whether your vehicle is safe to drive or not. You will be required to do a Vehicle Inspection Section with your vehicle.You must point to/touch and name the items you are inspecting and explain to the examiner what you would inspect and why you check. 

2.2.  Basic Vehicle Control

This test asks you to control the vehicle. You may be asked to move your vehicle forward, backward, and turn it within a defined area marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar. 

2.3. On-road Test

You will be assessed on your skill to safely drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations including left and right turns, intersections, railroad crossings, curves, up and down grades, single or multi-lane roads,streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive. 

Take note: The examiner will inspect the vehicle that you provide to make sure that it is safe to use during the road test. The vehicle you bring in for the road test must fulfill some requirements listed below:

• It represents the proper classification for which the commercial driver license is being issued. 
• The vehicle must have the manufacturer labels showing the GVWR of the vehicle. 

3. What is the cost of the CDL License in North Carolina?

4. Who is issued a North Carolina CDL?

You will need a CDL if you are operating any of the following vehicles:

• Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided that the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
• Any single vehicle with a GVWR over 26,0001, towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 lbs GVWR.
• A passenger vehicle designed to transport 16 or more people, including the driver.
• Any size vehicle carries hazardous material (Hazmat) placards, or a select agent or toxin listed in 42 CFR Part 73.
