TENNESSEE CDL Practice Test 2024

In Tennessee, drivers must get a Tennessee commercial driver’s license (CDL) to qualify for operating a commercial vehicle on road. To be eligible for the Commercial Operator’s License, all drivers need to pass the knowledge and road tests. Both of them may vary depending on the type of CDL and/ or endorsements you need.

1. What is included on the TN CDL Knowledge Test:

First of all, you must take at least 40 out 50 correct answers to pass The General Knowledge Test. Subsequently, depending on what class of license (A, B, C) and what endorsements you need (H, P, S, N, X, T), you are required to take one or more knowledge tests following: 

  • The Passenger Transport Test
  • The Air Brakes Test
  • The Combination Vehicles Test
  • The Hazardous Test

  • The Doubles/Triples Test
  • The School Bus Test

2. What is included on the skills test? 

You can take the CDL skills tests after passing the required knowledge test(s). There are three separate types of general skills that will be included: 

2.1. Vehicle inspection: 

You will be checked whether you know your vehicle is safe to drive or not. More specifically, you will be asked to do an vehicle inspection and explain to your examiner what you would inspect and why

2.2. Basic vehicle control: 

You will be tested on moving your vehicle forward, backward, and turning it within a defined area marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar.

2.3. On-road driving: 

You will be tested on your skill to safely drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations including left and right turns, intersections, railroad crossings, curves, up and down grades, single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive.

3. When do you need to get a Tennessee CDL? 

Depending on each vehicle you want to operate, you also need a specific Tennessee CDL as follows: 

  • Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds provided that the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B: Any single or combination vehicle with a GVWR over 26,000, towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 lbs GVWR.
  • Class C: A passenger vehicle designed to transport 16 or more people, including the driver or any size vehicle carries hazardous material (Hazmat) placards, or a select agent or toxin listed in 42 CFR Part 73.
  • Class D - Private Passenger, regular operator.

4. What documents do you need to bring when you apply for a CDL?

If you want to apply for a CDL license, please bring the following documents with you: 

  • Valid DOT Medical Card
  • Proof of your Social Security Number
  • Tennessee driver’s license or ID, or a valid driver license or CDL from another state.
  • Proof of Domicile in Tennessee.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident Status

5. How can you schedule a CDL skills test? 

5.1. At a Driver Services Center Location: 

CDL on-road tests can be scheduled for any of the Commercial Driver License Skills Test locations across the states by calling 615-502-4179 between the business hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CST Monday through Friday

5.2. At a certified CDL Third Party Program Participant: 

Another way to schedule your skills test directly is through The Certified CDL Third Party Testing Program Participant. Keep in mind that CDL skills tests administered by certified CDL Third Party Program participants may include additional fees or costs for the skills tests.

6. Who is required to hold a Tennessee CDL? 

  • A single vehicle with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs.
  • A combination vehicle with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs, towing a unit over 10,000 lbs GVWR.
  • A passenger vehicle designed to carry 16 or more people, including the driver.
  • Any size vehicle requiring hazardous material (Hazmat) placards, or carrying a select agent or toxin listed in 42 CFR Part 73.

7. How much does the Tennessee CDL cost?

The typically Tennessee CDL cost you are required to pay as follows: 

  • You will be charged $70 for a valid 5-year Commercial Driver's License Class A 
  • You will be charged $62 for a valid 5-year Commercial Driver's License Class B or C
  • You must pay a fee of $2.50 for each endorsement you require.
  • If you want to replace your CDL, you need to pay $12 for the 1st replacement and $16 for the second one.
