TEXAS CDL Practice Test 2024

In Texas, drivers who operate vehicles are required to possess commercial driver licenses to transport passengers or property effectively and keep the highway safe. To be eligible for the Commercial Operator’s License, all drivers need to pass the knowledge and road tests  which are administered by the TX Department Of Public Safety only. Both of them may vary depending on the type of CDL and/ or endorsements you need.

1. What to expect on the knowledge test? 

The Knowledge Tests are multiple choice and matching type tests. All applicants must answer 80% of the questions correctly before turning to the skills test.

2.  What is included on the skills test? 

The required road test includes 3 sections: 

2.1. Pre-trip vehicle inspection

In this part, your vehicle will be inspected for the following 

  •  Current liability insurance
  •  Current registration
  •  Inspection certificate
  •  Vehicle components: Headlamps (for bright and dim), 2 tail lamps, 2 stop lamps (one for 1959 models or earlier), Turn signals (1960 or later models),  Horn, Exhaust system, Windshield wiper,  Rearview mirrors, Safety belt,  Approved glass coating material, etc. 

2.2. Basic Vehicle Control

A driver will be required to perform three of the following basic vehicle control skills: 

  • Straight line backing
  • Offset back/right
  • Offset back/left
  • Parallel park (driver side)
  • Parallel park (conventional)

2.3. Safe on-road driving skills

Your road test will include the following driving maneuvers: 

  • Start/ Quick Smooth Stop
  •  Upshifting/  Downshifting
  •  Lane Change/Use of Lanes
  •  Merge
  •  Right-of-Way
  •  Posture
  •  Approach to Corner
  •  Traffic Signals/ Signs
  •  Left Turns/ Right Turns
  •  Intersections
  •  Railroad Crossing
  •  Curves
  •  Roadside Stop/Start

3. What happens if you fail the road test? 

If you don’t pass the Road Test, you can retake it again another day. Try your best to get the Commercial Driver License!

4. What are Texas CDL  Requirements

A person must meet the general requirements below to apply for a Commercial Driver License. 

You will be qualify to operate a vehicle within the state if: 

  • The driver must reside in the state of Texas.
  • The driver must be at least 18 years of age. 
  • English language is not required

You will be qualify to operate a vehicle or haul hazardous materials cross the states if

  • You are 21 years of age,
  • You are able to read and speak the English language,
  • You have  no loss of limb that has not been waived,
  • You have no impairment of hand, finger, arm, foot, or leg that interferes with driving.
  • You don’t have  heart problems, respiratory dysfunction,  high blood pressure, rheumatic, arthritic, orthopedic, muscular, neuro- muscular, or vascular problems that would affect vehicle control,
  •  You have no epilepsy or other condition likely to cause loss of consciousness
  • You don’t have mental, nervous, organic, or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with vehicle control
  • Your vision 20/40 or better in each eye with no color blind
  • You have good hearing
  • You are not addicted to drugs, and alcohol. 

5. How much does the Texas CDL cost? 

  • A CDL will need to be paid a fee of $60 for 5 years. 
  • You will be charged a $10 fee for changing your class or type of license, endorsement, or restriction, etc. 
  • If you take a learner’s license for commercial motor vehicles, you are required to pay a fee of $24. 
  • The fee for a replacement (duplicate) license is $10 fee
