Utah CDL Practice Test 2024

In Utah, drivers who operate vehicles are required to possess commercial driver licenses to transport passengers or property effectively and keep the highway safe. To be eligible for the Commercial Operator’s License, all drivers need to pass the knowledge and skills tests. Both of them may vary depending on the type of CDL and/ or endorsements you need.

Drivers should pay more attention and take time to learn more about these tests via Utah Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook so as to hold a CDL successfully. Furthermore, heading over to our Utah CDL Practice Test is the most reliable way to  access a free practice question bank and numerous flashcards. Let’s try it!

1. What to expect on the knowledge test?

You will have to take one or more knowledge tests, depending on what class of license and what endorsements you need. The CDL knowledge tests include:

  • The general knowledge test: It is taken by all applicants.
  • The passenger transport test (P): It is right for all bus driver applicants.
  • The air brakes test: If you drive a vehicle that has air brakes including air over hydraulic brakes, you should take this test.
  • The combination vehicles test: It is required if you want to drive combination vehicles.
  • The hazardous materials test (H): The test is required for those who want to haul hazardous materials as defined in 49 CFR 383.5.
  • The tank vehicle test (N): The test is required if you want to haul any liquid or gaseous materials in a tank or tanks which have an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. Besides, the tank is either permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or chassis.
  • The doubles/triples test (T): The test is required if you want to pull double or triple trailers.
  • The School Bus test (S) If you want to drive a school bus, you are required to take the test.

2. What to expect on the skills test?

After passing the required knowledge test(s), you can take the CDL skills tests. There are three types of general skills that will be tested:

2.1. Vehicle inspection:

You will be assessed whether you know your vehicle is safe to drive or not. More specifically, you will be asked to do an vehicle inspection and explain to your examiner what you would inspect and why

2.2. Basic vehicle control:

In this part, you will be tested on moving your vehicle forward, backward, and turning it within a defined area marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar.

2.3. On-road driving:

You will be tested on your skill to safely drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations including left and right turns, intersections, railroad crossings, curves, up and down grades, single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive.

Bear in mind that you are required to take these tests in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.

3. When do you require to hold a Utah CDL?

You will need a CDL if you are operating any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds provided that the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
