1. What to expect on the knowledge test? 

Depending on what class of license and what endorsements you need, you will have to take one or more knowledge tests. The CDL knowledge tests might consist of:

  • The general knowledge test: The test is taken by all applicants.
  • The passenger transport test (P): The test is right for all bus driver applicants.
  • The air brakes test: If you drive a vehicle that has air brakes including air over hydraulic brakes, you should take this test.

2. What to expect on the CDL Road Skills Test:   

If you pass your knowledge test successfully, you can take the CDL skills tests consisting of 3 parts: Vehicle Inspection, Basic Vehicle Control, and On-road driving. 

  • The Vehicle Inspection Test: You will check vehicle components and explain what is being checked and why to the examiner. 
  • The Basic Vehicle Control Test: You are required to perform straight line backing, offset right or left backing and alley dock backing. 
  • The Road Test: You are asked to operate a vehicle in normal traffic situations.
  • What are Commercial Driver’s License Age Requirements?

4. What must you bring to your scheduled skill test appointment? 

When you come to your scheduled skills test appointment, don’t forget to bring the following essential papers with you:  

  • Your current valid Driver’s Licenses and Commercial Learner Permit  
  • Proof of liability insurance and a valid registration certificate for the vehicle (and trailer if applicable) used for your skills tests. Furthermore, it must have a valid inspection sticker and meet all inspection requirements.  Keep in mind that your skills tests won’t take place unless you have the vehicle. 
  • DOT Medical Card, if applicable.  
  • For School Bus Endorsement: DOT Medical Card and must have completed school bus clinic within the previous 6 months (Instructor reports completion to DMV).
