1. What is included on the VA CDL Knowledge Test:

2. What is included on the skills test? 

After successful completion of the knowledge tests, you will take the on-road test. More specifically, there are three separate types of general skills that will be included and conducted step-by-step: 

2.1. Vehicle inspection: 

You will check if your vehicle is safe to drive or not. More specifically, you will be asked to do an vehicle inspection and explain to your examiner what you would inspect and why

2.2. Basic vehicle control: 

You will be tested on moving your vehicle forward, backward, and turning it within a defined area marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar.

2.3. On-road driving: 

You will be tested on your skill to safely drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations including left and right turns, intersections, railroad crossings, curves, up and down grades, single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive.

3. How much do you pay to get a Virginia CDL? 

Here are the fees for getting your commercial driver's licenses which are valid for 8 years in Virginia:

4. What requirements should you fulfill to get a Virginia CDL? 

Here are the basic medical, residence, and knowledge & skills requirements you must fulfill as follows: 

  • Be at least 18 years old to hold a Virginia CDL and drive a commercial vehicle within the state of Virginia.
  • Be at least age 21 to drive a commercial motor vehicle across Virginia state lines, carry hazardous materials, or transport any passengers.
  • Meet the medical requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations  such as Hearing Requirements, Vision Requirements, Blood Pressure Requirements, etc. 
  • Pass a set of written exams to obtain your Virginia Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP). 
  • Prove citizenship in the state of Virginia and have permission to work in the United States, showing legitimate personal identification which may include a Social Security Card, a Birth Certificate, or a Green Card
  • Certify that you are not subject to any of the CDL disqualifications for drivers (listed below)
  • Be able to speak and read the English language
