Wisconsin CDL Practice Test 2024

Drivers must arm themself with a Commercial Driver License (CDL) to operate vehicles and transport passengers, cargos, or property legally on the Wisconsin roads. Besides, a special endorsement is required for them to haul hazardous materials, transport passengers, drive school buses and school activity buses, pull double trailers or drive tank vehicles. Moreover, you need to handle a set of written tests which may vary depending on the type of CDL and/ or endorsement you need, a vision test, and a road test. 1. What is included on the knowledge tests?  

The standardized CDL Knowledge Tests consist of: 

  • The general knowledge test: The test is taken by all applicants.
  • The passenger transport test (P): The test is right for all bus driver applicants.
  • The air brakes test: If you drive a vehicle that has air brakes including air over hydraulic brakes, you should take this test. 
  • The combination vehicles test: The test is required if you want to drive combination vehicles.
  • The hazardous materials test (H): The test is required for those who want to haul hazardous materials.
  • The tank vehicle test (N): The test is required if you want to haul any liquid or gaseous materials in a tank or tanks which have an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. Besides, the tank is either permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or chassis.
  • The doubles/triples test (T): The test is required if you want to pull double or triple trailers.
  • The School Bus test (S) If you want to drive a school bus, you are required to take the test. 

2. What is included on the skills tests?  

After the successful completion of knowledge test(s), you must have your Commercial Learner Permit which is valid within 14 days before you are allowed to take your skills test. There are 3 types of general skills that will be tested as follows: 

  • Pre-trip inspection: You will check your vehicle to see whether it is safe to drive and then explain to the examiner what you would inspect and why. 
  • Basic vehicle control: You will be asked to move your vehicle forward, backward and turn it within a defined area marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers or something similar. 
  • On-road driving: You will be tested on your skill to safely drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations including left and right turns, intersections, railroad crossings, curves, up and down grades, single or multi-lane roads, streets or highways.

3. When do you need to possess a CDL in Wisconsin?

The Wisconsin drivers who are going to operate the following types of vehicles must armed themselves with a CDL: 

  • The vehicles weigh 26,001 or more pounds Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR)
  • The vehicles weigh over 26,000 Ibs, towing a unit over 10,000 pounds GVWR
  • The vehicles are designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver)
  • The vehicles transport hazardous materials or carry a select agent or toxin listed in 42 CFR Part 73 requiring placards (regardless of vehicle size.)

Take note: Your CDL must be renewed every 8 years and extensions of the 8 year period are not permitted. In case you move or change your address, you must apply for a duplicate Commercial Driving License with your new address within 10 days of moving at any DMV Service Center. 

4. How to obtain a Commercial Learner Permit? 

All applicants must get a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) to be eligible for the CDL skills test. Here are some requirements you must meet to obtain the permit: 

  • You are at least 18 years of age.
  • You hold a valid driver license.
  • You pass the knowledge tests for the type of vehicle you will be driving.
  • You have a valid federal medical card.

5. How do you take your Wisconsin CDL Skills Test?

You must have a CLP (commercial Learner Permit)  for 14 days before you are allowed to take a skills test. 

All applicants for a commercial driver license must pass a skills test in the type of vehicle they plan to drive. For example, the applicant are required to pass a skills test in a school bus or passenger carrying vehicle if he or she want to gain a license endorsements for driving a school bus or a commercial motor vehicle carrying passengers
